Harrison Plaza – Looking Back at the Country’s First Major Mall.

Harrison Plaza was the first major mall in the country, opened in 1976 after the opening of Ali Mall. The mall was built on the site of Harrison Park and Ermita Cemetery. For two years, between 1982 and 1984, the shopping mall was shuttered for renovations. When it was reopened to the public in 1984, the mall featured a cinema, amusement rides, Jai alai fronton site, fountain and a hotel in the 1990s.

College won’t be the same in the 90’s without this mall that serves as “tambayan” of students in Manila’s clusters of universities and colleges – in the long stretch of Taft Avenue from Ermita through Malate. The 7-hectare complex serves as their pantry and playground during breaks and after school.

For almost a decade now, rumors has been spreading that the mall will be closed and demolished. It was reported that SM Prime Holdings is planning to invest and redevelop the mall.

Despite of the availability of prestigious malls and commercial spaces, PTS Gadget Pawnshop opened our branch here last 2016. We considered the fact that the masses still frequented the mall because of it’s proximity to a residential urban area.

There’s still no finality to the closure but we will definitely miss the mall that started it all!

However, don’t be concerned just in case the closure is finalized as we just recently opened our Vito Cruz branch! You may visit us at:
